For popular music, are tunes generally written first or are lyrics written first to fit the melody?
Also, does anybody know who are the lyricists for Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Britney spears, etc? Or is it actually themselves?
I’ve been writing poetry for some time, but am thinking about transferring into lyrics because it involves cutting down a lot on verse lengths. It’s a bit different to poetry ![]()
Please answer!

I’d say it depends on the artist. Some may write lyrics first some melody. Ive heard lady gaga writes her own music not sure about the others…
The tune is added later….the words are written first and then passed over to musicians or producers, eg like Timberland….so the tune added on the words not words on tune
i agree with musicisf ,it depends on the artists themselves. As far as your poetry goes do it ,i write poetry and my husband plays music and although we tried to put music to my poetry it was hard to do .If you try doing it both ways , find what comes easiest for you.Good luck sweetie .
I do know that Mariah Carey has used lyrics and music from a musician called Babyface in her earliest songs ,britney i dont care to much for and Lady Gaga not my favourite but that is personal opinion
When most of these artists first started I’m sure they wrote much of their own lyrics, but unfortunately every last one now gets their lyrics handed to them by record label hired songwriters.
For the question about what comes first the music or the lyrics? The answer is both, none and some. Depends of the artist, the circumstances and the song. Some get inspiration from a simple tune while others may start with a line of poetry. Some artists may make the tune and the lyrics as they go. There is no wrong or right way.
